Behind the character hides a exceptional interior designer, who has worked for more than 15 years in the world of luxury and charming hotels with the complicity of its artistic director Cécile Chenais, student of the Ecole du Louvre, who came to decorative arts through the anthropology of space and artistic gesture. She joined him as artistic director more than ten years ago. Cécile is passionate about Oceanian art which is at the origin of contemporary art with Picasso or Braque and of cubist art.
The Laurent Maugoust studio has designed many decorations for hotels all over the world. Note that he is currently working on new projects including the 5-star Westminster Hotel located at 13 rue de la Paix in the 2th district of Paris, two M’Gallery by Sofitel in Champagne and Cap d’Antibes, also 4 star hotels. A site visit www.laurentmaugoust.fr will allow you to discover all of their hotel achievements.
In 2020, they present YGY, a luminous totem that combines sanitary and well-being functionalities reinventing the ritual of hospitality. In 2021, the two accomplices take the next step by inaugurating a line of furniture, accessories and lighting produced under the name Laurent Maugoust Editionswhich they presented at Silvera Saint-Germain des Prés in July of the same year.
The Laurent Maugoust studio took advantage of the parenthesis of the first confinement to take the time to draw a collection of furniture and lighting, part of which is actually suitable for hotel use, but the first step was to be able to put their creativity at the service of the know-how of the manufactures with which they dreamed of working by imagining high-quality pieces, thus broadening our field of expertise.
What is the origin of this project? These are requests from specialized companies in the hotel industry, such as the Collinet House, who initiated these beautiful achievements. Laurent Maugoust, present for several years at the Equip’Hotel show, called on this company specializing in furniture for the hotel industry and catering, to create traditional seats designed by his agency, the Betty range with rounded shapes and proportions designed for hotel constraints. They will extend their partnership in terms of product design thanks to this collection, which is a real success to date. Virginie Collinet CEO of the group: “ I have a lot of fun working with Laurent and his formidable team, whose reputation is second to none… enough to let us predict great joint projects. »
At the beginning of July 2021, Laurent Maugoust and Cécile Chenais exhibit their first self-published pieces as well as the collections they sign for Ecart International and Manufacture Henryot & Cie. In a deliberately minimalist style, the designer duo returns to the origins of their inspirations and displays a sculptural will in the craftsmanship of the pieces unveiled.
The Maison Ecart was created in 1978 by the famous designer Andrée Putman, who has also signed many hotels around the world with a modern-day French Touch and a fabulous range of products designed by her, still on sale today.
The Maison Henriot, manufacturer of refined furniture, is EPV certified, which means living heritage company, a label that authenticates the houses that work with their hands and this in the old fashioned way. Maison Henriot has among its many achievements, participated in the development of the liner “Le Normandie”.
The duo brings together the rusticity of shearling with the depth of lacquer, the sophisticated drape of box leather with the rough hold of linen. Laurent Maugoust and Cécile Chenais marry wood and metal, silk and horsehair, to shape pieces with clean lines, radical and graphic aesthetics., in a spirit as demanding as it is refined. A sought-after composition work is carried out in particular on the chestnut rug. This hand-tufted wool and silk piece, whose colors were chosen in the Chantilly stables by Galerie B, is dressed in spectacular horsehair and linen fringes woven by the Manufacture Verrier in Paris.
The Mantis-table has been designed so that its environment is reflected in the curved chromed metal legs, which seem to vanish under the majestic plateau of green quartzite from Brazil. The clean lines of Nabuco sofa, its singular and sophisticated volumes contrast with the raw aspect of its finishes. Finally, the Mâat offset floor lamp is a piece that is both radical and subtle, playing on the search for a permanent balance between wood and metal.
According to Thierry Guérin, international sales director of the Italian publisher Dedar: “Laurent Maugoust shares with Dedar the same desire to revisit classic codes with a knowledge of ancient techniques, craftsmanship and contemporary design. He knows how to appropriate our textiles and wall coverings with excellence for his hotel and residential projects, combining beauty and function. Her passion for beautiful materials combined with her clean lines make her creations unique. His energy is also reflected in the use of strong but subtle colors, playing with light, mirrors and contrasts. It is a pleasure to work with his team. »
Professionals from the hotel industry already have an appointment with Laurent, Cécile and their teams at the Equip’Hotel trade show in November 2022 at Porte de Versailles with the Espace Inspirationnel by Laurent Maugoust. During the last edition in 2020, which only took place virtually, their studio had worked around following this fantasized space, a constant source of inspiration in the aesthetics of the studio.
This installation staged the stakes of volumes, materials and a certain geometry of light. Laurent Maugoust has thought of a Suite, a Penthouse, in which it is no longer a question of modularity but of place to embody. This hybrid space told an extravagant and poetic story for an evening, a stay, an event.
The heart of the reflection focused on the staging of imponderable hoteliers and the particular and sometimes unique expectations of users. Each space was embodied by an archetypal object such as the bed, the bath, the desk, the lounges, the table, the dressing table. Hotel mythology in a way. The point was to materialize the know-how that designers can bring to the invention of new forms of hospitality. The studio has chosen to collaborate with publishers committed to know-how, and who develop solutions contract innovative and relevant in respect of the creations of interior architects, decorators and designers.
